Astronomy/black holes and neutron stars
Expert: Jayendra Upadhye - 3/7/2005
QuestionI'm writing a science fiction novel and I need to know if exotic matter with a negative energy density might theoretically be found in (or could be produced by) either a black hole or neutron star.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
AnswerHi Michael,
3 other people (young ones i would guess from the nature of their questions!), have already asked me similar questions.
So you must benefit from the replies i gave them!
I am pasting the links so you may pick up what you feel fine, and hopefully ignore the rest!
As you will gather after you read those links, what actually MATTERS is NOT whether your robos "think and feel like humans" - Asimovs "bicentinnial man", or "I, Robot"..
or Robots have a psychology (Susan Calvin), or whether alien intelligences inadvertently cause the cessation of the earth's gravity..(as they do willfully in Brian Aldiss' "Childhood's end"..
What MATTERS is that one effortlessly as a magician, diverts the attention of readers from "your troubles" (regarding what was in the positronic brain for instance, or how could gravity be suddenly suspended?) and BINDING their attention and emotions to a tightly woven "human" plot! (Asimov if you analyse, always did that, and So did Clarke a la space odessey).
What seperates plain fiction from Science fiction is that the science is always there as a "BACKDROP", with the characters innocuously "dropping" juicy tid-bits of "real" and "pseudo" info on topics ranging from those that fall under "reality" to those that fall under "possible reality"!
All the masters really relied on this interplay of fact and fiction and succeeded in blurring the boundary so much so that "willing" readers loved to loose themselves in the resulting "alternate reality"..to "be there" where exciting things were happening at the "percieved frontier of technology"!
In such scenarios, the author gets away by just TELLING the readers the GOSPEL TRUTH that -ve energy fields were generated in the black hole as "discovered by the great such and such" in century x of the christian era!
You also can try and do this, and if you are a person of above average writing skills, and are good with plots and sub plots, lo and behold, a STAR will be born!
