Question
How are white holes formed, and where can they take you? I saw them on t.v. with my dad.(This is my teachers e-mail adress)

Answer
Hi Ian.....
I answered a similar question 3 years ago, but it was about
black holes, worm holes, and white holes, so I'll go back and
cut and paste my previous answer  below about white holes....  (cut and pasted)

{Some background here...before we knew what so-called white holes (quasars) were, a fancy science fiction writer came up with the term, and idea of,  'worm hole' to 'connect' black holes to white holes. Turns out that white holes (QSO's-  Quasi-stellar Objects) weren't what the science fiction writers thought, but simply the cores of quasars which, in turn, turned out to be the cores of very distant early, very energetic galaxies out there billions of light-years. An explanation of their high energetic output was found.....thus the science fiction  idea of an imaginary, pure  'white hole' quickly disappeared, and along with it, the term "worm hole" acting as a "connector" on the macro scale.
(Wormholes are still thought to exist by the way, but only
at the sub-sub-micro atomic scale, way below the size of an
atom).  Not at our normal macro-scale.}

Ian, we (and YOU)  have to keep fiction separate from facts.  What you saw in a movie was fiction, that's why they call it....science fiction.  It's mainly not true, but just a fanciful story.  Just like going backward in time, and speeds faster than light....it is ALL prohibited by the laws of physics.  And we even know, and have the equations, telling us WHY  it cannot be done.
Makes for cool stories, but they are all fiction...fiction means
that this story may not be true to the laws of Physics.

So the idea of pure "white holes" and the movie about
where they take you...on TV or the movies.....is all false and
untrue....just makes for a fanciful story.

Hope all this helps,
Clear Skies,

Astronomy has been my hobby/pasttime for over 50 years.  Currently own 3 telescopes, the largest of which is a 30 inch Newtonian truss Dob that is portable.I taught Astronomy/Meteorology at the University Level for 13 years before retiring in 1995. Being retired and home most of the time, I am able to answer all questions relatively quickly, unless it's a new moon weekend with good observing conditions.  No astrology questions please, or questions about alleged UFO picture identifications.
