Question
Can astrophysics explain the possibility of their existence utilizing cold plasma, electromagnetism or some such combination? (I have no formal education in these matters, just a gnawing curiosity and fascination on the subject, I am 74 years old but would like to learn more about astrophysics and will look for the book that you have recommended "The fourth state of matter") I would also like to thank you for providing this access to the subject free of charge, which most people with your great knowledge and expertise would not. I stand in awe!

Answer
"Astro"physics is just a subspecializition of physics.  Physics Today (the professional magazine we all get) had a special article on cold plasma just the...uhhh..."other month."  By that I mean it was months ago and I don't recall how many, but yes, physics can explain how they exist and how they can be used, from cutting to welding.  What exactly do you want to know about cold plasmas?  I'm not a topical expert, but I can help.

Expertise

Fusion, solar flares, cosmic rays, radiation in space, and stellar physics questions. Generally, nuclear-related astrophysics, but I can usually point you in the right direction if it's not nuclear-related or if it's nuclear but not astrophysics.

Experience

Currently a physics professor at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. Doctoral dissertation was on a reaction in CNO-cycle fusion, worked in gamma-ray astronomy in the space science division of the naval research laboratory in the high-energy space environment branch.

Organizations
Physics professor at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

Education/Credentials
Ph.D. in physics, research was on nuclear fusion reactions important in stellar fusion.
