Atheism/Christian world view and depression.

QuestionI'm working on my masters in anthropology. I'm writing a paper for my anthropology of religion class. My topic is depression stemming from living in a culture with a christian world view. Depression from perceived sin, religious doubt, spiritual repression and pressure from the "christian work ethic". I'm interested in what you think on this subject and also in getting any info I can from you on the subject.
Thanks...Steve
AnswerSteve:
It's very interesting that you pose this question to me right now, as I just recently had an exchange with a regular emailer about this very subject. However, his slant was that depression is more common in atheists, becuase they don't have that pillar of religious strength to lean upon.
I think I like your view better, though.
Inasmuch as depression is caused by external factors, yes... I do think that the dogma of Christianity that is hammered into us can be horribly detrimental. One has only to look at the depression suffered by many brought up with such dogma when they begin to question their sexuality. Untold numbers of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and others have suffered horrible guilt and depression because of their perceived "abomination" status.
Another aspect that you didn't mention, but that I feel is accurate, is that the belief in an afterlife (whether the Christian heaven or any other reward-based afterlife) would lead one to not think much of this earthly existence. If it weren't for the Judeo-Christian prohibition against suicide, I think lots of pious believers would be sucking on the ends of shotguns in order to see the pearly gates as soon as possible. But even short of self-destruction, this view does cause many of the devout to consider this life of much less importance than the "next" one. Possibly enough to be depressed over having to survive it? Dunno, but it's an interesting thought.
I'm sorry that I can't point you in the direction of any studies done on this topic. But I hope this was helpful, anyway. Best of luck with your paper!
