Atheism/Ways to help?

Question
I've never wanted to push my "freedom from religion" ideas on anyone, but it's getting to a point where some civil rights (in specific situations) are being slowly squished under the wheel of religion.

Any suggestions on how to get involved? How can I help?  How can I contribute?  Make a difference?

Answer
1. Write letters to the editors of local papers.

2. Join a local atheist, humanist, or freethought group and be active. If there isn't one, considering starting one under the auspices of a national group.

3. Stay informed. Keep reading about recent news, philosophy, arguments, etc.

4. Become politically active in local groups and thereby establish a godless perspective in an organization which is more general in its orientation. This includes groups like the PTA, environmental groups, etc.

5. Be public about your atheism, so that people can see that being an atheist doesn't make one an immoral monster. Set a good example.

6. Consider more extensive writing to get your point across - perhaps a column in a local newspaper or something online. In order to do it well, you'll need to devote time and practice to the project. Reading more will help your writing improve, if that's a concern.
