Question
What is the atheist stance on teaching abstinence in American public schools?  Is there any far-reaching opinion among the atheist community and what are the specifics of why sex-education should stay out of school.

Answer
Hello Lindsay,
Atheists, in general do not follow a central doctrine as would a Baptist or a Muslim but I would say that most do not have a problem with either. I noticed that your question is phased in such a way as to suggest that these are two opposing views. To teach abstinence without sex education would be to support only one agenda and that would be ignorance. Personally I think they both compliment each other. Don't forget that abstinence is a choice and the key word in sex-education is not sex, it's education.

I can answer just about any question that you may have about Atheism itself, dealing with being an Atheist in a religous world, or theological, religion based questions concerning atheism.

Experience

I became an Atheist at the age of 15 and have remained so for the past 21 years. At that time I was the only Atheist that I had ever met so I spent the next several years researching most types of religion as well as the concept itself. I am not here to convert or argue, but just to help you find the path that is right for you.
