Hi there i am looking for further info on not having a biological father specifically in preschool years. Something my mother finally confirmed at age 21, my father was not my biological father. I was relieved and satisfied to have my suspicions confirmed.

I have been conducting research into “Effects of not having your biological father in preschool years.”
It has been suggested that this lack of biological father could have a strong link to substance abuse and addictive type behaviors. I am unsure why or even the authenticity of this claim.

I find it amazing so many people take the time to answer stranger’s questions, and I would truly value your opinions theories or any relevant comments.

Dear Tania,

Thanks for asking me your question.  I consulted with a friend of mine that also has knowledge of family function and dysfunction, and we wanted to share with you some problems about your assertion.

First, where did you hear that not having the biological father around in the preschool years could be negative?  Second, I wonder what about your family life or how your 'father' interacted with you made you suspect that he was not your biological father?

It is much less likely that the absence of a biological father is the cause of the links to substance abuse and addictive type behavior. You really have to look at both the mother's and the father's family history - regarding ADHD, other mental conditions and also substance abuse.  There are clear genetic links to all of these.  

Let me explain.  If the reason the father left in the first place was because he had some of these issues, and later the child developed some of the same issues, then it is more likely due to the genetic link - not the environmental response to not having the biological father in the home (but it could have contributed).  That is not to say that it isn't harder on the family that has a step-father or no father in the home, but coping strategies can be taught and prevent substance abuse and addictions to illegal substances.  

That doesn't mean that the addictive personality won't still be an issue; but the coping strategies would help the person make better choices and therefore he/she may be better able to channel that energy into more healthy outlets, such as exercise or sporting events.
