Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/4 year old

Question
I know a neighbor with a very active and impulsive 4 year old boy in a regular nursery school program who runs out of the room, has trouble sitting still during circle time, grabs other children's toys and shows other difficult to manage behaviors. His parents are in the process of having him evaluated and enrolling him in a smaller class for September. His teacher wants to keep him in class for the rest of the school year. They do not want to go the medication route. They are using behavior charts to try to help him develop better self control. I was wondering if you're familiar with specific techniques or approaches that you'd recommend be used with children beyond behavior management to help them improve their self control and decrease their impulsivity. Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer
Dear Stu,

Thanks for asking me your question.  I apologize for my tardy response.

The behavioral program I would suggest is called 1,2,3, Magic.  You can find out more information about it from ADD Warehouse.

Also they may want to look into having an Occupational therapy evaluation.  Sometimes sensory tools can help children calm down and other equipment may help children remember to sit in their seats.

A weighted lap pad and a move and sit cushion are some of the things that come to mind, but an occupational therapist would be best able to prescribe the methods and equipment that will work with this child.

Thank you for you interest and desire to help.

Many Blessings to you for your kindness.
