QuestionMy daughter is 17, bright and very outgoing. She has been trying to get a part time job lately and all the companies require testing that seems to squelch her ability to get a job. She has documentation and accommodations. How does that apply to job applications and not being discriminated against??? Especially when testing is not her strong suit
Answer Firstly, if she does have ADD, is she on treatment for the condition and is there any disablity caused by the condition? The assumption is ADD does have signs and sympóms that may and may not be under control.
Next, ADD people do have certain short commings and at the same time certain talents. It would be of major importence no to apply for a job that would not suite her. Job satisfaction for her self esteem is vital and at the same time allows her to perform optimally to maintain her position.
If the prospective firm have pre-employment testing I would expect it would be specifically designed for their purpose. Thus not being able to pass would be a good reason for the applicant not to persue the issue.
However ADD/ADHD should never be a reason for discrimination. I have certainly seen some of my patients succeed and eventually become senior roll players in major industry. Successful employment must suite both the applicant and the employer.
