Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/ADHD son

Question
Hi Dr. Levin.   My son has been taking Concerta since the 2nd grade as he is severely hyperactive. He is 13 now and in the midst of going through puberty. I was wondering if ADHD boys calm down somewhat after puberty due to the testosterone. I have heard different theories on this. I'd appreciate your opinion. He's on 90mg right now, but I only keep him on 54 when he's not in school.    Thank you much,,,,,,,dara

Answer
Firstly I hope you are not fiddling with your son's dosages but rather doing it under the supervision of the prescribing doctor. Next, you might have heard theories. I would prefer to quote medical science. There is a tendency for ADHD to improve over time and for some, but not all to outgrow the need for medication. Reducing the weekend dose is fine as long as the patient copes well. Testosterone boosts the right brain making ADHD worse. Hence the rebellious 16 year olds.  13, going on 14 is usually a stable age provided the dose is optimal. Girls Estrogens  boost the left brain. ADHD is a`left brain immaturity and a right brain excess. That is why testosterone may make matters worse.
