Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/auditory processing disorder vs. visual spatial disorder

Question
I've been told, at no surprise to me, that my son has an auditory processing disorder.  He does seem to fit the profile even genetically as his father appears to be the same.  My questions is, how does a visual spatial disorder relate to auditory processing disorders.  When I do the research, he seem to have every sign of a visual spatial disorder.  He did have a cord wrapped around his neck at birth and needed a little oxygen but otherwise healthy.  He does have allergies and has had a handful of ear infections as a toddler.  He also does seem to have very minor sensory issues.  I'm just trying to make sure he is getting the best help he can.  Also, he was evaluated by a speech therapist and audiologist in a public school.  Would it be better to take him to a speech pathologist who specializes in such topics?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Dear Carol,

Thanks for asking me your question.  Auditory Processing Disorder and Visual Spatial Disorder can occur alone or with other conditions.  What seems interesting to me is that there is a history of a brain issue - you may want to see about having a occupational therapy evaluation to check on all of your son's sensory systems.

Some therapists in the school setting are very good with the language therapy that is needed to treat auditory processing disorders, just ask the therapist what her opinion is about how to treat them.  If she doesn't really have an opinion or looks at you strangely she probably doesn't have the experience you are looking for.  You can also get additional help privately and let your son also get the therapy at the public school.

I hope that I have answered your questions adequately.

Many blessings to you.
