Question Hi
I'm 26, 1.80cm, 85Kg. I study math and computer science, and have trouble focusing, especially during lectures and when faced with pressure (such as before tests). I was diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. My IQ is 142, but my achievements are below par. I've been prescribed Ritalin two days ago. My doctor is starting me on a low dose (5mg X 2) and building it up to an effective dose. This has had an extremely slight affect on me. I felt like after drinking a cup of weak coffee.
What dose would you expect to be effective for me? Also, how long does it take for it to work. I mean, should I expect results after a few days? A week?
One last question: are there long term issues I should be aware of?
Thank you in advance,
Daniel.
Answer Hi Dan, all your questions make a lot of sense. However, I have a question? Why did your doctor not inform you? Nevertheless here are my comments.
Height, weight and age play no part in establishing the optimal dose. The use of rating scales is the most effective method. Starting small and increasing to optimal makes good sense and within 10 to 20 days an optimal dose can be achieved. Within approx. 1 hour the full effect of an optimal dose will be felt but only lasts about 4 hours with Ritalin. It should be given 3 times a day, every day.
There are no serious long term side effects to worry about if the medication is used correctly. Good luck with your studies.
