Question hi my 18year old daughter has finally been diagnosed with adhd after years of being labelled a disruptive pupil and a troublemaker. while seeing her psychiatrist for anxiety i said i would like an adult assessment done for adhd.as you know in scotland this can be very difficult. but eventually she was assessed by a doctor in a different health board who within 5 mins of speaking to her said it was very obvious to her i also produced all of her school reports and she did rating scales.she sent her recommendations to her own consultant(recommended concerta).
at appointment with her own psychiatrist, who by this point was new and didn't know my daughter.her opening line was i know nothing about adhd and im very reluctant to give out this type of medication as its prone to abuse. i explained the difficulties my daughter had been through in her life being undiagnosed and that she has real problems with concentration and if concerta can help her achieve success with her present course then her self esteem would improve.she agreed to prescribe concerta but only after full medical.which is being done at the moment. my question is who would oversee her medication should it be her g.p (who is brilliant)or would it be her psychiatrist.the reason im asking is the psychiatrist didn't seem sure herself.
Answer I have only one way of answering you and that is truthfully. However if I said what deserves to be said I would certainly be very insulting to the ignorant Psychiatrist. How does he propose to treat with not insight. What purpose does the medical examination serve???????. How will the GP supervise with no training. How does anyone know what dose of Concerta will be optimal unless the doctor is an expert guesser????? As you are from the UK and I advise on <adders.org> in the UK as well, get on to their website and I will do an internet assessment (if you feel the need) on your daughter in order to correctly advise you. My email is on their website.
