Question
My 17 year old daughter takes Topamax daily for migraines.  When she gets a migraine, she takes axert.  She is very good at multi-tasking, has never done very well in school, dislikes reading, has trouble staying focussed.  I want ask her neurologst to test her for atten. def. disorder, but I worry about her being on so much medication.  What are your thoughts on the Topamax and, possibly, meds for ADD?  (She is on 50mg. Topamax daily.)

Thanks so much!
Chris

Answer
Dear Chris,

Thanks for asking me your question.  I don't know of any specific link between migraine medication and ADD symptoms.  I would think that the relationship is stronger between the fact that she is female and that she is 17.  ADD may just happen to be there too.  At your daughter's age, I would suggest that you discuss it with her.  Ask her what she thinks.  There are other treatment options for ADHD.  Exercise is recommended and there are sensory and organizational supports that may help.  Medication is not your only option, but she is coming to an age where she needs to help make the decision about whether she thinks she can function better.  No matter what she chooses, she will still have to do the work - remembering to take the medication and doing the strategies that might help.  You really can only provide her with the information and also help pay for it.

I hope that helps you some. She may not feel that she needs to improve any, despite her not being focused.

Many Blessings, for being such a caring Mom.

Christine
