Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/stimulants for adult adhd

Question
I'm 55 and have had adhd since age 16 or so and have been on ritalin 20mg twice a day with a complete resolution of symptoms for well over 30 years.  I have stopped the drugs numerous times (I thought that I would outgrow the problem oe lose my jo because I was taking stimulants), but when I did so I really did poorly.  Several years ago, the doc who prescribed the ritalin dies and I  basically stopped the drug.  I was able to retire (my performance on the drug was good enough to be sucessful enough to make a very good salary), so for the past 2 years I have been off ritalin, but my life is a mess (the usual adhd symptoms).  I finally made an appointment with a new doc; long story short, she told me that I didn't need stimulants, told me to take Strattera (was a disaster) and that adults who take stimulants are "drug seeking".  She also told me that she didn't believe that I had a sucessful career (chemist and Air Firce pilot-I went off the drugs to pass the physicals)..so she told me that she wouldn't prescribe a stimulant under any cirsumstances.  O.K., I'm not going to die without ritalin, but the symptoms are miserable. Last week, her office had me sign a release for my military and medical records and the doctor called me a wek later. Long story short; she was in disbelief that my history was accurate and truthful;  I'm really a retired chemist and USAF colonel with adult adhd.  My question:  this doc is a gem and I like her; but is it usual for doctors to treat adult adhd patients like lepers?  I was so sick of "begging" for ritalinthat I have given up trying; despite the offer of this doctor to treat me.  If ritalin was "bad" before she got my recors, why is it "good" now?  thanks

Answer
If an adult at any age, does have ADHD severe enough to warrent medical treatment with Ritalin there is absolutely no reason why it should not be prescribed by a competent qualified doctor. Just as important  the patient should be treated with respect and dignity. Unfortunately you describe an ignorant arrogant doctor who obviously has no specialized knowledge of adult ADHD. If you are in need of treatment and it helped in the past you should seek advice from another doctor.
