Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/Hypertension and Ritalin

Question
Hi Dr.

I am a hypertensive individual and I'm taking Diovan HCT and Norvasc to treat the BP.  Recently my pdoc added Ritalin to my psychiatric medicine profile and I'm concerned about the potential interaction between the drug and the condition.

What should I be careful about and how should I use Ritalin safely.  Please assist.

Thank You,

Chaim Bochner

Answer
There is absolutely no reason why your hypertension and ADHD cannot be  safely treated at the same time. First the BP must be well controlled and  then the  Ritalin. It must be at an optimal dose to be effective over at least a 12 hour day. This is achieved by monthly monitoring preferably with the use of  rating scales to adjust until optimal.
