Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/ADD and Metal Toxicity

Question
Hello, I recently had my 13 year old son's hair tested for heavy metals.  He did have some traces of Lead, Cadmium, Mercury and Arsenic.  They fell into the "acceptable" range for an adult.  However, my son is only 4'9" and 90lbs.  I know that all of these metals are toxic in any amount but was wondering if I should go ahead and schedule a appointment w/his PCP to discuss it further.  He has been on Ritalin for 8 years and isn't due for another check up for another 6 months.  Thank you for any advise.  I am trying to find him an alternative to the Ritalin.

Answer
Dear Renee,It is sometimes so difficult to hold back and only say what is polite and acceptable. For the sake of your child I feel I must throw caution to the wind and say what I feel should be said. Firstly forget about the nonsence of metal toxicity. It has nothing to do with ADHD.His weight is fine but his height is on the short side. Ritalin does not cause stunting of height, it can only slow it down a little. This is made up eventually. So please do not stop his Ritalin because of his height. Is there a family tenency to short stature? What concerns me most is the fact you see your doctor so infrequently. How can he monitor, evaluate, advise ,council etc,etc when he see your son so infrequently.Children should be seen and monitorted on a monthly basis when on Ritalin.
