Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/ADHD
Expert: Dr Billy Levin - 11/8/2007
QuestionMy son is 4 years old and currently goes for speech therapy once a week. But he also has concentration problems and is forgetful. I searched online for the symptoms of ADHD and found that he had all the symptoms. He will be going to a pediatrician tomorrow (9 Nov) and I am a bit scared of what he is going to say. I also believe that he is to young to be diagnosed with ADD. What are my options? How can I help my son to perform at his best?
Thanks
Elizabeth
AnswerThere is no point going to the doctor if you are afraid of the truth. It is even worse going for Speech therapy without a medical diagnosis as to why he has a speech problem. Speech and language problems are often caused by ADHD. Your son is getting treatment before the diagnosis! It is never too young to diagnose ADHD or to treat it with medication. You can help your son best by going to a doctor who is an expert on ADHD. Medical treatment even at this age will make him more teachable. Thus if he really needs speech therapy the teacher will achieve more now that he can focus better and be taught, on treatment.Good luck with the Paediatrician.
