Question
I am currently taking the generic for Aderall (combo amphetamine and dextroamphetamine).  I recently pulled some information on Aderall and found that is not commonly used to treat adults.  Which of the stimulants would you recommend or that have worked best for you?

Answer
Dear April,

Thanks for asking me your question.

I don't know what source your information came from, but all stimulants are frequently tried in adults.  The condition is the same in children and adults and MD's have found success with stimulants.  They have also found some success with Welbutrin.

However, non of that matters if the generic for Adderall is working for you. I wouldn't advise you switch medications due to some arbitrary article you read.  Dosing of medication is more of an art than it is a science.  MD's have to take into consideration your family/genetic tolerance for medication, any history of adverse reactions you have had regarding medication, your current metabolism, other current medications you are taking that may interact with a new Rx and then the types of medications that typically are used to treat the condition.

Most people are more concerned with not finding a medication to work.  If it is working - that's not a problem. If, on the other hand, it isn't working, then I suggest, simply, that you visit your MD and discuss alternative medications that would work better for you - not necessarily 'better for the condition.'

I hope that makes sense.  I have been restricted from taking stimulants at this time, however, I know many women who are taking Adderall have found it beneficial.

Blessings to you.
