Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/Am I dyslexic and do I have ADD

Question
I face a rough life due to the inherent attention problems that I seem to suffer. I have been told many times in college and other professional situations by teachers and trainers that I look lost when involved in a classroom  situation or work. I lose focus of the topic discussed and my mind wanders indefinitely to unrelated and illogical themes. The train of thought is just not there. My attention span is very short and I cant concentrate on vital issues or people for long and as a result, I cant multitask. I have trouble adjusting to new people and situations quickly unlike my friends and colleagues. I prefer repetitive scenarios to changing ones.
My memory has gradually deteriorated and I cant memorize even simple things like lists. I became disorganized and dont plan ahead for my future goals. I am caught up with my past and think about the future rather that thinking and living in the present.
I come across as agressive when trying to make a point and a lack of assertiveness interferes in my professional and personal life. My social life is non-existent and I run away from people instead of socializing with them.
I was told in an interview that I lack lateral thinking. My mental reflexes are slow but I retain past knowledge of different fields. I cant learn new things and my attitude became negative because of that.
Im just 24, running away from my life when I should enjoy it and live it to the fullest.
Do I suffer from ADD and dyslexia

Answer
Dear Naresh,

Thanks for asking me your question.  It sounds to me like you do have some signs of attention issues, but since you have indicated that it seems like your memory is getting worse, there may be more to the situation.

I suggest you do 2 or 3 things. First, Go onto a site called amenclinic.com and do the Adult ADD self-test.  You usually have to click on the link twice.  After the results come back, I would recommend that you see an MD - perhaps a psychiatrist or neurologist.

It is very unusual for someone your age to be losing short-term and active working memory.  You may need medication as well as therapy.  Only an MD or psychologist is qualified to assess your condition.  I strongly recommend that you investigate your symptoms further - and as soon as possible.

The sooner you know what condition you have, the sooner you'll be able to design your own personal treatment plan which will include how to educate others and compensate for your weaknesses.  It should ultimately lead to an improved social life, as you will have more understanding of who you are and will be better able to balance your studies and your friends.  Compassionate friends are a necessary part of your treatment plan.

Best of Luck to you.

Sincerely,

Christine
