Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/effective ADHD treatments
Expert: Dr Billy Levin - 8/17/2006
QuestionI've been on numerous medications. Currently, I am on Concerta 72mg. I've been on stattera, ritalin (generic)...
I work hard... but my grades don't reflect my hard work...
I also have a problem remembering things... even having done it repetitively... I don't understand what is wrong with me... it is very frustrating...
I know that medications work differently in individuals... is there anything better than medications? Are there other options? I have also tried herbal supplements... they weren't effective...
Is there any help out there for women with ADHD? I'm 29 years old. I'm a hard worker... but a very slow learner... I am currently trying to achieve my Bachelors in Electrical Engineering in Technology.
It's weird... Some times, I'll get good grades on assignments, but then ask me how to explain it or redo... and I just can't... How do I justify these grades? I feel like I've learned so much, but still feel that I don't know anything. I often question myself on any future success after graduating. I'm scared... I feel like a fony.
thanks for listening,
Sandy
AnswerIf I assume your diagnosis is correct, it is still possible the 72mg Concerta is too little. Concerta 72mg is equal to
Ritalin 20mg three times a day. Some patients need more. With ADHD the main problem in 95% of cases is the poor concentration, which is part of the left brain's immaturity. In rare situations it is a memory problem as well as a concentration problem. It is not well known that Vasopressin, used for another medical condition called Diabetes Insipidus (not to be confused with sugar diabetes) will enhance memory dramatidcally.Memory is also mainly part of left brain Thus both a stimulant like Concerta together with Vasopressin could be the answer. Study methods also play a part especially the colour of the book in front of you. Revision before you forget is essential. Using a yellow globe in a reading lamp might improve you intake. I suggest you discus this all with your doctor. Your choice of career is well chosen for ADHD with a good right brain, but it is the exams that are the big hurdle. Once you qualify it will be plain sailing.
