Question
QUESTION: I'm a 27 year old woman and I don't have a boyfriend. I have not had too much experience with men since I'm still a virgin, although I have been nude and taken showers with a boyfriend before. I'm very beautiful.
Every day my mom keeps complaining that I'm not married yet. She says I'm ugly, I'm not pretty, no man would want me.
I'm in the middle of getting a doctorate degree.
It's getting annoying. What should I tell her?

ANSWER: Hello Anna!
Tell her that her rude put-downs are going to cause her to lose contact with her daughter. You don't have to put up with this even from your mother. It'd be a shame, but the reality is that many people - even parents - simply don't appreciate the people they have in their lives and do dumb things like this which causes them to slowly lose contact with those people.
Every single time your mother says anything like this, get up and walk away from her, hang up the phone, or whatever. DO NOT give her any attention unless she treats you with the respect you deserve.

QUESTION: Why would anyone make a comment like that in the first place?

Are you asking me why anyone would do this or why your mother would do this?
I don't know your mother and I'm not very good at reading minds, so I can say why she'd do it.
When others do it, it is generally because they have low self-esteems and do these things to feel better about themselves. Mothers are not immune to having low self-esteems by the way.
