OK- how does one approach a strange woman in a bar or coffee shop or somewhere? That's something I've never been good at.

Thanks for your note. Ask her about the locality or some other non-obvious question.
This is one of the better non-intrusive ways to start conversations with strange ladies in strange places.
If the lady is naturally unfriendly (and this can happen) this doesn't make it seem like you were hitting on her and she doesn't like you.
