Audi Repair/2000 A6 2.8 Cam Adjustment malfunction

Question
I have a 2000 A6, 2.8, with 224k km.  Oil temp gauge does not provide reading (gauge doesn't move) and check engine light on.  Local garage indicated faulty oil temp gauge sensor.  The fault code was cam adjustment malfunction.  Cleared code, but it came back.  Are problems related?  Quote for cam sensor $750 for just the part...are there other options to explore first?
thanks for any assistance-insight

Answer
Unless you fix the problem, you shouldn't clear the code.  The cam sensor is expensive new, but they do not often fail so a used unit will be much more cost effective.  Time for a trip to the local import dismantling yard...  Let me know how you get on,  Jan
