Question
I have a 1996 Mercury Sable with the OEM FM/AM/Tape player. It does not have the cd controls on it, but i would like to have at least a cd player, preferably the OEM cd changer. Would i just have to swap out the head unit and install the cd changer?

Answer
the amplifier and the radio are in one box in the trunk it looks like this picture

if you have a 13 pin plug you are ok that is the cd changer plug
the unit at front with the ac controls is only the radio controls not a radio you can find one on ebay with a cd button for under $25.00
and if you follow this link it will take you to the cd changer with the data cable
