Audio Systems/connecting satellite to stereo receiver and TV

Question
Hello,
Can you tell me what connections I need to make between a satellite DVR and a stereo receiver so that satellite TV sound can come through a 5 speaker audio system? [The TV is connected to the DVR(using video 3)].
            Thanks, Kathy

Answer
This will depend on what audio outputs are available on the satellite box. For a true surround sound experience, look for a digital audio output. They will be either an optical cable or an RCA jack (usually color coded ORANGE).

On the receiver, look for a digital audio input, once again optical or RCA. That is where you will connect from the DVR.

One thing to note, both devices need to have the same output/input type. If the DVR only has optical and the receiver only has RCA (or vice versa), you are out of luck.

I hope this helps.
