We have a 6 year old HD tv and now have a problem.  We turn it on, picture plays for about 3 mins, picture goes off, still have sound and in order to shut off tv you have to unplug it.  Is it a problem we can fix, or are we shopping for a new TV?

Your best bet is to find a local repair guy that will come to your house and for about $50 tell you what what's wrong and how much it costs to fix it.  The repair might cost $300 or $1000 at that point you can decide if it's worth the repair or just getting a new one.
