Audio Systems/2003 VW Jetta Monsoon Radio - CD error

Question
Good morning. The CD player on my 2003 VW Jetta is displaying the following message: CDP ERROR 1. [It is a single CD/radio/cassette unit in the dash.]
While the car has 88k miles on it, I have only recently been using the CD player a lot - on average 3 hours a day for the last 2-3 months. I've been having issues the last couple of weeks... Initially I would get the message once in a while, on some tracks of a CD, but not all, and sometimes could get through an entire CD or two with no message. At first I thought it was damaged/scratched CDs. But I fear it is the unit. Now all I get is the message. What does that error message mean? Is there any hope?
I spoke with the VW dealer, and they said that they cannot replace radios. They have to remove them and send them back to the manufacturer for repair, for +/- $350. I'm just listening to audio books - don't need anything fancy!
Thanks for your help!
