Audio Systems/Eclipse AVN5435 volume malfunction

Question
The volume button on my head unit has mysteriously stopped working only on the + side. You can turn the volume down day and night no problem, however it won't turn up unless you jam it sideways and wiggle the whole head unit. Do you know of any cost effective fixes that I can do myself?

Answer
Seems like a bad control to me.  But, it could be a loose connection or cold solder joint where the control mechanism interfaces with the electronics or it could be a defective control (which would require replacement).  If you pull the unit out of the dash and remove the covers you may be able to visually see what is causing it, but it is better left to a technician who can test and measure to verify what is going on.  Even if it needs a solder touch up it will require a skilled expert because it is too easy to spoil something in the unit if you slip and break something or overheat it while soldering.  The spaces are tight inside and they are not easy to work on.  With an expensive unit like this you will want to do it right!

Best wishes,
