Audio Systems/broken stereo

Question
I have a kenwood stereo reciever KR-596 and a pioneer sx-1600 both or them blow fuses the instant you hit the power button.

Answer
Both are quite old models.  At their age it could be any of a number of ailments.

Here are some things that are known to cause the fuse to blow.

ONE: Shorted voice coil in one of the speakers placing a dead short on the output.  To check it just remove all the speaker connections at the back of the receiver.

TWO: Shorted output transistors placing dead short on the power supplies.  Repair involves replacing the output transistors and regreasing them good for proper heat transfer.

THREE:  Electrolytic capacitors in the power supply are known to fail as they age and become - yup, you guessed it - a short circuit to the power system.

If you have a vom and some testing skills you can check it out and find which of the three - or four - problem areas are most likely.

If you need further help give a follow up holler.
