Question
QUESTION: I've just been given a non-powered Sony turntable.  I would like to know if it is possible to convert it so that it has it's own power supply.  This is so that I can connect it to my mini hi-fi system (it has red and white phono connectors).

Thank you in advance....

Kaz

ANSWER: Probably.  But, I need the model number or picture of the unit.  There are so many turntables and they are all different in the way they interface with the outside world.  For example, it may have a magnetic or moving coil cartridge in the tonearm which requires an RIAA equalized preamplifier to bring the voltage level up to line level to feed your mini system.

So, send me a follow up question with the model number of the TT and the mini system you are using so we can check the technology and the interface requirements.

Cheers

QUESTION: The turntable is a Sony PS-LX56P and the hi-fi is a Philips FW-C100.

Answer
THanks.

Here is the spec sheet on this model:

http://www.nodevice.com/images/sm/big/2008_08_09_14_50_26/6299_1.jpg

ONE: It IS a moving magnet type cartridge and, therefore, will need a Phono Preamp in between the red/white cable outputs and the input to the Philips FW-c100.

TWO: If you see the spec sheet you can see it comes in various input voltages depending on what countries version you have.  Then, look at the power cable end; if it is not for connection to the mains in your country you will need to convert the power plug; either with a conversion plug or snip the current one off and solder up the correct one.

THREE:  The Philips FW-C100 does have aux in and that is where you would connect the output of the phono/equalizer preamp.

FOUR:  You can purchase RIAA eq preamps at various audio and electronics shops.  You could google shop for them to get an idea of where to start looking.  Go to:

http://www.google.co.uk/

And use key words like RIAA audio turntable preamp

And Best wishes.
Cheers.
