Radio power button works, power comes on and stays on. the problem is the volume will work once in a while. radio will be on with no volume then all of a sudden ther is volume. I pulled the radio and checked wires all good.

sounds like a dirty volume control, you must take stereo apart enough to get to the back of the control, where you can give it a little shot of control/contact cleaner. if there is too much involved in doing this, then visit a junkyard for a replacement stereo.
