Audio Systems/bmw 528i radio problem

Question
I recently bought a 1996 BMW 528i and the radio is really weird.  When I turn the car on the radio automatically adjusts the bass all the way to the left (max base), and the balance automatically adjusts to the left. If I turn off the radio while the car is running it will remember the settings (which I have to manually readjust every time I start the car).  The radio is the BMW autoradio business which came with the car(cassette model).  As far as I know there were no modifications to this.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
