Audiology/Otolaryngology/ear pain

Question
I have been having ear pain(in both ears) for the past 2 years.  I get the pain on and off every day.  The pain will only last a few seconds each time.  I get the pain inside and around the perimeter of my ear.  I also have a problem with balance.  I often feel the need to grab on to something so I won't fall.
Do you have any ideas of what this could be?
Should I see a doctor about this?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Vicky,
It is possible that these two symptoms are not related.  From your description, the ear pain could be due to temporal mandibular joint disorder (TMJ).  The balance problem, however, can stem from either your inner ear, a neurological problem that affects your legs or spine, or a more central neurological problem affecting the balance portion of the brain.  It could also be caused by some medications.  Falls are a leading cause of injuries, especially among older people.  Therefore, I highly recommend you start by consulting an ear specialist who can evaluate both problems.
Hope this helps.
