Audiology/Otolaryngology/vertigo/boat induced

Question
I also had boat induced vertigo two years ago after taking a cruise.  The last night was very rough with the boat rocking at about 45 degree angles.  While in bed, I was being rocked with my head and feet moving up and down.  I had vertigo for 6 months.  I did not find a doctor that treated vertigo.  I have had short bouts after short trips on ski boats.  Three weeks ago I spent about 1.5 hours on the water in a sound/ocean and I am experiencing severe vertigo.  What type of treatments are available from a physical therapist  and what medication are available.  I also have severe ear pain when flying and sometimes driving over mountains.

I called the ENT's office and they said they do not treat vertigo and the general practice doctor did not have a treatment option.  I have not called a doctor yet, but it is intefering with my life.

Thanks
Lisa

Answer
Hi Lisa,
You tell me that the doctors do not TREAT vertigo, but have you had a full evaluation?  Only an audiologist can do this.  Without a complete diagnosis, no one can treat you. And, although it does sound as if you have Mal Debarquement, there may be other concomitant issues.  Therefore, you need a complete hearing and balance evaluation.  If your problem is indeed from the inner ear, then you need to seek a physical therapist who specializes in Vestibular Rehabilitation.  You can find more information here: http://www.vestibular.org/
Hope this helps.
