Question
I'm a 40 yrold male who has severe bilateral sensourinural hearing loss and I'm not having troubel still hearing converstional speech and I dont think more ampllification will help much.My questiob how will and Otology exam determine how damaged my inner ears are can they give me better treatment options than an audiologist.just for background my hearing loss Is (HIH)AND postlingual...Thanks for any help.

Answer
Hi Fred,
The only one who can truly evaluate hearing loss is an audiologist.  The audiologist is also the only one who can advise on non-medical treatment of hearing loss, i.e., hearing aids.  However, if you feel you are no longer benefiting from the hearing aids and still have great difficulty, it may be worth your while to consult an otologist about the possibility of a cochlear implant.
Hope this helps.
