Question
My 9 year old son has always had very sensitive hearing. He has to wear earplugs at the movies, parades, basketball games, etc. He also has a very loud speaking voice. We constantly remind him to lower his voice, which he does, but then he gets loud again. I don't think he knows when he's doing it. This is causing a lot of social problems with other kids. They don't want to play with him because he's too loud, all the time. How can a kid have such sensitive hearing and be so loud at the same time? Is there anyway I can help him?

Answer
Hi Stacy,
Have you had your son's hearing checked?  Many children with history of middle ear infections or hearing loss will be sensitive to sound yet will speak loudly. So, the first thing is to have your son evaluated by an ear specialist, and then his hearing evaluated by an audiologist.  Once that is done and any medical reasons are ruled out, you may consult with his school and find a speech therapist who can help him modulate his voice.
Hope this helps.
