Question
Hi- I have developed an intermittent problem whereby I hear a 'popping' sound usually in the right ear, and then experience periods- of varying length- when although I hear external sounds normally, I hear my own breathing and my voice takes on a 'booming' quality in my head. I am a singer, and find the 'feedback'in my head is extremely distracting.  I have been prescribed Cetirizine Dihydrochloride for pollen/ dust allergy, but it does nothing for the symptom I have described, and have been unable to obtain further advice.

Answer
Hi Eric,
This certainly sounds as if it is a Eustachian tube dysfunction.  Have you had your hearing checked?  There is a simple test for ETD that any audiologist should be able to perform.  Have you seen an ENT, an ear specialist?  They can prescribe a nasal spray that can open the tube. You can also try some saline nose spray which is available over the counter.
Hope this helps.
