Audiology/Otolaryngology/ear infection

Question
Hi doctor, I couldnt ask another follow up because it didnt allow me.
I couldnt manage to see an ENT, instead I have seen 2 GPs, one has prescribed me otodex and said I have an ear infection and that the ear looks scaley.
The other prescribed me penacillin for good measure and said I may have an ear infection.
I am unsure which to take, I have never taken antibiotics before so I think I am gonna go with the eardrops.

Answer
Hi Michael,
These two drugs treat two different conditions.  Otodex treats the outer ear and really does no good against middle ear infections, and penicillin treats a middle ear infection but does no good really against inflammation of the outer ear.  Without proper diagnosis, it is not good to take antibiotics "for good measure" as ill-advised antibiotic usage leads to drug resistance; however, an untreated middle ear infection can lead to other complications.  The only advice I can give you is that you must see an ENT who can examine your ear and give you the proper treatment.
Hope this helps.
