Audiology/Otolaryngology/Ear Fluttering

Question
I was in car wreck in May of 2008. Have had a lot of problems with my neck and arms (numbness). In the last few days, I have had fluttering in my right ear only when in stoop down as to pick up something. Right now that is the only time it does it. Could it be from the accident? I have used ear cones but it still does it.

Answer
Hi Joyce,
The fluttering you are experiencing may be due to a rapid contraction, myoclonus, of one of the middle ear muscles. In itself, myoclonus is not dangerous, however sometimes it can be a symptom of something else.  It can be caused by head trauma.  Ear cones...which in themselves are extremely dangerous...will have no effect.  Because of your history of being in a motor vehicle accident, it is worth it to have this evaluated by an otologist.
Hope this helps.
