Question
I've been dealing with a strong ear fungal infection in my left ear, Now, 7 months later in my pregnancy and 5 months later with this infection has moved to my right ear. I am really concerned about my future baby and if this will have any consequences on my pregnancy. The ENT seems not to find a solution to my problem. I've been to the ENT several times, it gets clear for a week, then the fungal infection is back. What would you recommend, I have seen 2 different ENT's..
Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Rosie,
There really is no indication that I can find that would suggest any danger to your pregnancy either from the fungus or the medications.  There are a few things to consider about why you keep getting the fungus.  The ear canal is a warm moist environment and thus very prone to fungi.  On top of this, if more water gets in, for instance when you shower, and you do not properly dry your ears, this will encourage more fungal growth.  Has the ENT given you Vo-Sol drops?  Essentially, this is just a vinegar base that you can put in your ear several times a day to alter the environment in your ear and make it hostile to more growth.  Or you can make your own mixture of half-alcohol half-vinegar and use that in your ear especially after showering.  Also, are you putting anything in your ear, e.g., ear plugs?  If so and you do not thoroughly sterilize/disinfect it, you will keep re-infecting your ears.  The alcohol-vinegar mixture is not harmful to the pregnancy, but you should still check with your OB before using.
Hope this helps.
