Audiology/Otolaryngology/Fluttering and Popping noises in Ear

Question
I've had fluttering and popping noises in my ear for over 1 year now.  ETD was diagnosed.  A recent visit to an ENT specialist, couldn't find anything wrong, the ear drum is moving correctly, no fluid was detected, my hearing is perfect, however the fluttering and popping still occurs, even though not as strong. ENT specialist say it's nothing to worry about as they can't find anything wrong. I feel this will never go away. my right ear pops violently sometimes and I find that a relief. However my left ear never seems to clear fully, and I feel like it needs to pop but it never does. It's so annoying.  I'd be grateful to get your opinion.

Answer
Hi Eanna,
Fluttering can be a sign of myoclonus, a contraction of one of the small muscles in the middle ear. It often accompanies ETD.  If you are still bothered, you may ask your ENT about this.  There is a simple test for it and it usually can be treated by some muscle relaxants.
Hope this helps.
