Audiology/Otolaryngology/Plugged Ears

Question
Hi there,
For the past couple years, whenever I get a head cold my ears get very plugged. I've been taking anti-histamines regularly, using over the counter nose drops and am continually trying to release the pressure by pinching my nose and holding my breath. Nothing seems to be working. I'm getting very frustrated from the pressure, constant ringing, muffled sounds and the pain that eventually accompanies this problem. Is there anything else I can do? I'm thinking about going to a walk-in clinic tomorrow, but I'm wondering if it would be a waste of time.
Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Answer
Hi Kim,
You may very well have a Eustachian Tube Dysfunction.  You need to consult an Ear specialist (ENT) for a complete and thorough evaluation.
You also need to have your hearing evaluated.  Sometimes in cases of severe ETD, the ENT will insert a tube that will open up the ear and relieve the pressure.  But all that will be determined by the physician and the outcomes of your evaluations.
Hope this helps.
