Audiology/Otolaryngology/Sinus Issues and Altitude

Question
My 11 yr old daughter was recently sick with fever lasting 3 days, but no other symptoms. At her doctor appointment yesterday, she was diagnosed with Cedar Fever, a sinus infection, and fluid buildup in her ears causing some bulging but not an ear infection, even though she complained of no pain. She was put on antibiotics, Sudafed, and two nasal sprays. She was also told she could not go on our long planned trip to New Mexico from Texas because of the altitude change and the threat of bursting ear drums.

She will have been on the medications for almost 5 whole days before we would get to New Mexico (we are driving, not flying) and we are staying several nights on the road, which will make it a more gradual change. Is it really true she should not go? Her doctor tends to be somewhat 'extreme' at times. My daughter is very upset that she might have "ruined" our family vacation.

Please advise and thank you in advance!

Answer
Hi Beth,
Even with gradual changes in altitude, it is possible for an already compromised middle ear system to get worse. Even if there weren't the possibility, it is never a good idea to go on a long trip with a sick child. As I have not seen your daughter personally and your physician has, I would not go against his advice and it would be wise to heed his recommendation.
Hope this helps.
