Audiology/Otolaryngology/periodic sharp pain in ear

Question
I've never had an ear infection but I've developed this sudden sharp pain in my left ear. Cold air doesn't bother it, and it's not a longing pain. I'll be fine just talking and living my life when all of the sudden I'll get a sharp pain starting mid-way on the side of my neck and extending up to my ear. It's such a sharp pain that my neck spasms uncontrollably. Then it's gone just as soon as it came. At the beginning of the day it only happened maybe once an hour. It's 7:00 p.m. and its happening every 5-10 minutes.

Answer
Hi Krystal,
If this pain is so intense as to cause neck spasms, you need to consult a physician.  There are nerves that run along the side of the face and neck that, if inflamed, can cause the symptoms you describe.  You should try your general physician first.  If he doesn't find anything, then either consult an ear specialist or a neurologist.
Hope this helps.
