Question
For some years now I can hear wooshing noise as in a heartbeat in my left ear. One doctor says its quite common, the other tested my bp (fine) and my craniel nerves and listened to my corotid artery and said she could hear it but didnt refer me to ENT. Should I be worried? I have no symptoms.
Hi Denise,
Although whooshing/pulsatile noise in the ear is not uncommon, it still needs to be evaluated by an ear specialist. Some of the more common causes of this type of tinnitus are a blood vessel which may be close to the eardrum, a vascular tumor such as a "glomus" may fill the middle ear, or a vein similar to a varicose vein may make enough noise to be heard. It would be well worth your while to be evaluated by an ear specialist and have your hearing checked by an audiologist.
