Audiology/Otolaryngology/Very fast ear popping

Question
Hi, about 2 months ago I noticed that my ears would pop very very fast (about 10 times in a row or so). I've heard some people experience such symptoms when they are sick or have allergies. However, I was not sick the first time I experienced this. After a few weeks it went away, but came back shortly again. It only happens when I have a small burp. Never when I yawn or swallow. I don't think I have any sinus problems, I seem to be breathing fine and never have a runny nose. I don't think I have allergies and I never had mononucleosis.
Do you think it is something serious? Should I see a doctor?

Answer
Hi Crystal M,
It sounds as if you may be experiencing a myoclonus - rapid rhythmic contraction - in one of the little middle ear muscles. Usually myoclonus itself is not serious; however, it can be symptomatic of another problem.

If this matter does not clear on its own, you may want to see an ear specialist for a definitive diagnosis.  Myoclonus, if bothersome, is usually treated with muscle relaxants.

Hope this helps.
