Question
Hi,

I have been looking for help on a ear problem I have been having (maybe 2 weeks now). My left ear feels like it has pressure in it and also I constantly hear a constant hum, I am hyper sensitive to loud sounds yet find it hard to hear at the same time. I have never had any problems before with my ears or sinus and have not had a recent cold so I'm not sure what is causing it. I went to my general Dr. he did detect a presents of fluid in the inner ear but no infection he put me on Allegra-D and a nasal spray.(3- 4 days now) So far no relief!! It is very annoying and uncomfortable and really bad if in a public place too loud. Any suggestions? HELP!!

Answer
Hi Amy,
The presence of fluid in the middle ear suggests that there is a disorder with the function of the Eustachian Tube (ET).  The ET is a tube leading from the middle ear to the nasal cavity and helps the ear to maintain normal pressure.  In cases of sinus disorders, upper respiratory infections or viral infections, this tube dysfunctions causing a fluid buildup.  If the fluids is allowed to remain, bacteria begin to grow and can either cause the eardrum to burst or harm the delicate bones in the middle ear.

If the nasal sprays have not helped, and it has been longer than about 10 days, you need to consult an ear specialist who can determine if there is a bacterial growth as well as have an audiologist test your hearing to determine the amount of loss.

Usually a course of antibiotics is indicated, sometimes even a repeat course.  In severe cases, a tube may need to be inserted into the eardrum, and the fluid would need to be drained.

Hope this helps.
