Question
I have had the following symptoms since October of 2008:
   * Eye redness (Rt. eye)
   * Eye pain (Rt. eye)
   * Light sensitivity (both eyes)
   * Cloudy vision (both eyes)
   * Floaters in my field of vision (both eyes)
   * Flashes of light in my vision (Rt. eye)
   * Dizziness and vertigo
   * Nausea
   * Headaches and sinus pressure (Rt. eyes)
   * Extreme fatigue
   * "Brain fog" - difficulty concentrating

Since 2/17/09, I have also experienced a sense of fullness and pressure in my ears.  I am not, nor have I experienced any pain; it just seems like I have earplugs in.  I do not have, nor have I had a sinus infection during the 5 months that these symptoms have persisted.

I was seen by an optometrist and 2 ophthalmologists for the eye related complaints.  The 1st ophthalmologist prescribed steroid drops, which did not help.  Oddly enough, I began experiencing the inner ear fullness AFTER the steroids drop therapy.  The 2nd ophthalmologist said that I simply had dry eyes and prescribed lubricating eye drops.  I am currently taking an over-the-counter decongestant per my GP to help with the sinus and inner ear congestion, but it isn't really helping.

Could my eye and ear problems be related?  Thank you in advance for your attention to my health concerns.

Answer
Hi SDM,

Some of these symptoms, e.g., light sensitivity and flashes of light, may be related to a type of migraine. Migraine can affect both eyes and ears.  Some of your symptoms, especially the "brain fog" and fatigue are also found in cases of fibromyalgia or multiple sclerosis, depending upon your age.

My advice is that you consult a neurologist and have a complete neurological evaluation. After that, you may consider consulting an otolaryngologist who can evaluate your sinus and ear problems.

Hope this helps.
