Question
Dear Dr
My 11yr old daughter has first had the symptoms of mumps(swelling of glands)on 20/3/09 and started getting a ringing & some loss of hearing in her right ear on 23/03/09. She occassionally gets some dizziness followed by vomiting. She has described the feeling in the ear as muffled and like come down in an aeroplane. She still has some swelling in the face but not to the extent that it was before. I have been letting her steam with some albas oil and then holding her nose to blow gently to see if this will release some of the pressure. Is this temporary and is there anything else i can do??Cathy

Answer
Hi Cathy,
Mumps is a viral infection which can spread to the auditory apparatus.  With your daughter's symptoms, you need to consult an ear specialist immediately to assess the damage and find an appropriate treatment. Without proper diagnoses and treatment, the loss may become permanent.

Hope this helps.
